llms.txt Generator: what to know

The llms.txt generator writes the file proposed at llmstxt.org: a short Markdown summary of your site for AI tools. You fill in your site name, a one-line summary, optional details and sections of links to your most useful pages, each with an optional note, and the file updates as you type. Copy it or download it as llms.txt and upload it to the root of your site. The tool warns about relative or invalid URLs, links without a URL and sections with no links, so the file stays easy for a program to read.

Be clear about what the file does. Google has said that Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files, so publishing one won't change your rankings, AI Overviews or AI Mode; those features use pages from Google's index. Some AI tools and coding assistants do read llms.txt, which is why documentation sites often publish one. Our llms.txt and AI search reference page sums up what Google's documentation says and which controls actually change how your content is used. The generator runs in your browser and nothing you enter is uploaded.

Popular uses

  • Publishing a summary of documentation for coding assistants
  • Pointing AI tools at a site's most useful pages
  • Writing a first llms.txt to edit by hand later
  • Checking an existing llms.txt structure by rebuilding it

Tips for the best result

  • Use full https:// URLs in every link; a relative path only works if the reader knows where the file lives.
  • Keep notes to a few words that say what's on the page, not marketing copy.
  • Put secondary pages under Optional so a tool short on context can skip them.
  • Don't use llms.txt to control AI crawlers: that's robots.txt, with the tokens each operator documents.

Frequently asked questions

No. Google's guide to generative AI features says Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI text files, so they neither help nor harm a site in Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode included. Some AI tools and coding assistants do read the file, and that's the reason to publish one.

Markdown: an H1 with the site or project name (the only required part), a short blockquote summary, optional details, then H2 sections that list links as "- [title](url): note". A section called Optional, written last, holds links a tool can skip when it needs a shorter context.

At the root of your site, so it loads at https://www.example.com/llms.txt as plain text. The proposal also allows a file in a subpath, such as /docs/llms.txt, covering the pages under it. Use full URLs in the links so they still work wherever the file is read.

No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may request, and well-behaved crawlers follow it. llms.txt only suggests what's worth reading; it doesn't allow or block anything. To control AI crawlers, add robots.txt rules for the user-agent tokens their operators document.

No. The text, HTML, files and images you paste or open are processed on your device and are not sent to our server or stored. The five URL tools (SEO audit, indexability checker, redirect checker, HTTP header checker and broken link checker) are the exception: they send the URL you enter to our server, which requests that public page (and, for the broken link checker, each link on it) and returns what it received to your browser to check. The URL and the page aren't stored or logged. The optional Import from URL in the meta tag, Open Graph and Twitter card generators works the same way.

Yes. Every tool is free with no sign-up and no limits on use. Clearly labeled ads keep it that way.

They help you get the details right: tags that are complete and valid, previews that read well, files crawlers can parse. No tool can guarantee rankings; those depend on your content, your site and how search engines evaluate them.
