XML Sitemap Generator: what to know
An XML sitemap lists the URLs you want search engines to crawl. The sitemap generator turns a list of URLs, one per line, into a valid sitemap.xml file following the sitemaps.org protocol: the urlset with the right namespace, a loc for each URL, characters such as & escaped, and an optional lastmod date. Download the file, upload it to your site's root and submit it in Search Console.
Google uses lastmod when it's consistently accurate, as a hint about which pages changed and should be recrawled. It ignores changefreq and priority, so they don't need to be set. A single sitemap may hold up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed; for longer lists the generator splits the URLs across several files and writes a sitemap index that lists them.
Only include canonical URLs that return 200 and are meant to be indexed: no redirects, no noindex pages, no URLs blocked in robots.txt and no tracking-parameter variants. A sitemap helps discovery, especially for new sites and pages with few internal links, but it doesn't guarantee indexing. Point to it from robots.txt with a Sitemap: line so every crawler can find it.
Popular uses
- Creating a sitemap for a small static site
- Building a sitemap from a crawl export or spreadsheet
- Submitting new pages after a launch
- Preparing a URL list for a site migration
Tips for the best result
- Use absolute URLs with the same protocol and host as your canonical pages.
- Leave lastmod out rather than setting every page to today's date.
- Generate sitemaps automatically from your CMS when the site changes often.
