Meta Tag Generator: what to know
The meta tag generator writes the tags that belong in a page's head: the title, the meta description, a robots rule when you need one, a canonical link, the viewport and charset, and optionally Open Graph and Twitter tags for sharing. Fill in the fields and copy the HTML; there's nothing to configure beyond what the page needs.
Only a few meta tags affect Google Search. The title and description shape how your result looks, the robots tag controls indexing and snippets, and the canonical link suggests which URL to index when several show the same content. The viewport tag matters because Google indexes the mobile version of pages. Tags such as meta keywords are ignored by Google and are left out on purpose.
If your site runs on a CMS or a framework, use its SEO settings or head component rather than pasting raw HTML into a template, so each page gets its own values and you don't end up with two title tags. The generated code is a good reference for what those settings should produce: open your live page, view the source and compare.
Popular uses
- Writing the head of a new static page
- Checking what a CMS's SEO plugin should output
- Adding noindex to thank-you and internal search pages
- Setting a canonical URL on pages with tracking parameters
Tips for the best result
- Use an absolute canonical URL, including https:// and the domain.
- Leave robots out for normal pages; index, follow is the default.
- Escape quotes in titles and descriptions, or the attribute will end early.
