Schema Markup Generator: what to know

Schema markup is structured data that describes a page to search engines in a fixed vocabulary from schema.org: this page is a product with this price, this is a business at this address, this article was written by this person. The schema markup generator builds that data as JSON-LD, a script tag with JSON in it, which is the format Google recommends because it sits apart from your HTML and is easy to maintain.

Pick a type, fill in the form and copy the code into your page's head or body. The generator covers the types most sites use, and the dedicated generators on this site go deeper for FAQ, breadcrumb, local business, product and article markup. Every output has @context set to https://schema.org and the right @type, and empty fields are left out rather than written as blank values. Some types, such as HowTo, are valid schema.org but no longer produce rich results in Google.

Structured data makes a page eligible for rich results such as product stars, event dates and breadcrumbs; it doesn't guarantee them, and Google says it isn't a general ranking factor. The markup must describe content that's visible on the page. Before you deploy, run the page through Google's Rich Results Test, which is the only way to confirm eligibility.

Popular uses

  • Adding Organization markup to a home page
  • Marking up products, articles and local businesses
  • Prototyping JSON-LD before adding it to a template
  • Learning which properties a schema.org type uses

Tips for the best result

  • Use one JSON-LD block per entity, or an @graph array for several.
  • Only mark up what's on the page; hidden or invented details break Google's guidelines.
  • Check the result with the schema validator, then with Google's Rich Results Test on the live page.
