Breadcrumb Schema Generator: what to know
Breadcrumbs show where a page sits in a site, such as Home > Guides > Trail running. The breadcrumb schema generator turns that trail into BreadcrumbList JSON-LD: a ListItem for each step with its position, name and URL. Google can use the markup to show the trail in your search result in place of the raw URL, which reads better and hints at the site's structure.
Each item needs a name and a position, starting at 1. Every item except the last should have a URL (item), pointing at a real, indexable page; the last item is usually the current page and can leave the URL out. Google accepts trails with or without the home page as the first step, and a page may have several trails if it sits in more than one category.
The markup should match the breadcrumb links people actually see on the page. If your site doesn't show breadcrumbs yet, add them to the page first: they help visitors move up a level, and they give crawlers useful internal links. Then add the markup to the same template so every page gets its own trail.
Popular uses
- Adding breadcrumb markup to category and article templates
- Showing a clean path instead of a long URL in results
- Fixing breadcrumb markup with wrong positions
- Prototyping markup for a new site structure
Tips for the best result
- Use absolute URLs in item, matching each page's canonical.
- Name steps the way they appear on the page, not keyword-stuffed versions.
- Generate the markup from the same data that renders the visible breadcrumbs, so they never drift apart.
